Local
Energy
There are two critical
factors that will reshape our western lifestyle;
Climate Change and
Peak Oil. Both are
interconnected; Climate Change, as we all know, is the
result of excessive fossil carbon which has been
released into the earth’s atmosphere since the
industrial revolution, and Peak Oil is the maximum point
at which finite oil and gas production will reach before
declining whilst demand for these commodities continues
to rise, thus impacting economic stability. Climate
Change requires a massive reduction of fossil carbon
emissions now; this could be achieved by seriously
addressing Peak Oil which needs a massive reduction in
fossil fuel dependency.
With oil and gas production nearing its ‘peak’,
it is necessary that society’s dependency on
centralised electricity and gas supplies lessens, with a
greater shift toward localised, independent renewable
sources. Dilemmas such as “how does one obtain a
basic necessity such as heat in winter when it becomes a
precious commodity and prices triple?” and
“from where will electricity for light and
cooking come during black-outs when the National Grid comes
under immense pressure due to over-demand?” can
be resolved by installing renewable energy systems in our
own homes, providing independent energy security and
‘peace of mind’. Being more careful not to
waste the energy we already have by becoming energy efficient, upholds energy
conservation benefiting everyone. Right now is the
time to seriously think about the immediate future;
this responsibility rests on all our shoulders. At
present, Government is listening in part and acting in
part; not enough is being done at this level, so if
you have the means to make serious changes to your
household or business’s energy supplies, a wise
choice would be to act as soon as possible.
This is not scare-mongering, this is
reality!
Local Energy is a resource to help you make informed
choices.
Local Energy lists agencies who can advise you on all
micro-renewable options, as well as energy efficiency
and available grants.
Local Energy also provides a directory of suppliers and installers of these
various renewable technologies (this will grow through
time). Simply changing your electricity supplier to
Good Energy (who source all their
electricity from renewables) can also make a
significant difference to reducing carbon emissions.
Technology has now provided a sustainable way for us
to take control of, and prioritise, our most immediate
energy needs. It is better to be
proactive now, than reactive later.
